Most people searching for backtesting software actually want one of three different things: a replay simulator to practise a strategy on historical markets, a trading journal to review trades they have already taken, or one platform that does both. Those are different jobs, so there is no useful single winner for everyone. A scalper wanting tick-by-tick replay has different requirements from a swing trader reviewing six months of live trades. We compared the things that materially change how useful each tool is: replay quality and data resolution, historical depth, whether you can actually place simulated trades during replay, journalling and analytics, broker connectivity, supported markets, and whether the software runs in a browser or needs a desktop setup. We also compared price, including annual billing where relevant and whether the advertised free option is genuinely usable rather than a short trial wearing a free hat.

Rewind, go-to date, custom indicators, Monte Carlo and a prop-firm simulator make it a broad manual-testing package. The biggest catch is data and market coverage: one-minute is the finest resolution, with no automated testing, stocks or futures, and one chart per session.

    Best for: Traders wanting deeper TradingView-powered replay

    FX Replay is a TradingView-powered backtester with journalling, MT4/5 and cTrader auto-sync, plus Monte Carlo and a prop-firm simulator on Pro. Its entry paid tier costs $17.99/month, while Pro adds seconds-level replay data, futures, CME and stocks. The free tier is genuine, but usage is restricted, and even Intermediate caps you at 10 sessions of 200 trades. That makes the limits the main catch for anyone who backtests heavily rather than occasionally.

    Best for: Serious forex testing with tick data and automation

    Forex Tester is dedicated Windows backtesting software built for traders who want depth rather than a broader journalling platform. It offers tick-by-tick data going back up to 23 years, manual replay, EA-style automated testing and as many as 10 synchronised charts. It also works offline and uses a familiar MetaTrader-style interface. Pricing is a one-time licence, with a free demo available. The main catch is convenience: it is Windows-only and requires software installation and historical data setup.

    Best for: Traders wanting deep replay alongside broker-synced journalling

    TradeZella combines detailed backtesting with a substantial trade-journalling setup. Plans start at $26/month billed annually, with no free plan. You get 11+ years of tick-level data, tick-by-tick trade replay, automatic syncing from 500+ brokers and prop firms, plus Zella AI and Zella University. It is a strong option if you want testing and review under one roof. The biggest catch is the entry cost: you need to start paying before you have established whether your strategy works.

Pro costs $29.95/month, Premium $49.95/month and Elite $79.95/month; there is a 7-day trial but no free plan. Elite also adds Level II and time-and-sales for stocks. The biggest catch is price: its strongest replay and market-data capabilities sit on increasingly expensive tiers.

    Best for: Reviewing real trades and execution quality

    Tradervue is a mature trade journal rather than backtesting software. Its strength is importing and analysing real trades across stocks, futures, options and forex, with detailed execution-level analysis of fills. The free tier is capped at 100 trades a month; Silver costs $29.95/month and Gold $49.95/month, with no annual discount. It remains a sensible choice for traders primarily interested in reviewing an existing trading record. The obvious catch for this round-up is simple: there is no bar replay or backtesting at all.

    Edgewonk is a journal and analytics platform with an unusually strong focus on trading psychology. Its Tiltmeter measures rule-breaking against P&L and win rate, supported by the Psychology Lab, mental journal, session report cards and entry and exit optimisation. Everything comes in one $197-a-year plan, with VAT added at checkout, no free tier and a 14-day money-back guarantee. The biggest catch is that its analysis starts after you trade: there is no chart-based bar replay for testing new strategies beforehand.

    Best for: Proving a forex track record publicly

    Myfxbook is the obvious pick when your priority is demonstrating verified forex results rather than practising a strategy. It connects to MT4 and MT5, automatically tracks accounts and produces a publicly verifiable, shareable record. It is free, with an optional subscription around $15/month to remove ads, and also offers AutoTrade, an economic calendar and a large community. The biggest catch for backtesters is fundamental: there is no backtesting, bar replay or proper journalling workflow. It records what happened rather than helping you test why.

    Best for: MetaTrader users wanting tick-level simulation for life

    Soft4FX is excellent value if all you want is a dedicated forex simulator. A lifetime licence costs $109 plus tax, includes free updates and covers one user and two MetaTrader accounts, with both MT4 and MT5 versions included. You get 10 to 20 years of tick data, while the free demo provides a limited taste. The catch is the workflow: it runs inside MetaTrader on Windows and requires historical data setup. It is also strictly a simulator, with no journal, analytics platform or broker sync.

    Best for: TradingView users prioritising charting and market coverage

    TradingView Bar Replay sits inside arguably the strongest general charting platform here, with enormous market coverage and a huge script library. Intraday replay starts with Essential at $14.95/month, offering roughly six months of one-minute history; deeper history requires higher plans. The free Basic plan only replays daily and higher timeframes. The biggest catch for manual backtesting is pricing: placing simulated orders directly inside replay requires Premium at $69.95/month or Ultimate, rather than being included with entry-level intraday replay.

How to choose the right backtesting software

If you have not proved your strategy yet, start with a replay simulator that has a genuinely useful free tier. You need to find out whether your rules survive historical markets before worrying about sophisticated analysis of a live trading record. Paying every month for a dedicated journal when you barely have any trades to review is doing things backwards. Use replay to generate a meaningful sample first, record what happens and identify obvious problems. Once you are trading consistently, deeper journalling becomes considerably more useful.

If you already trade live and want to understand why you are losing, a proper journal with broker sync can earn its money. Automatic imports remove much of the tedious record-keeping and give you enough structured data to examine execution, setups, mistakes and patterns across real trades. This is where Tradervue, TradeZella, TraderSync and Edgewonk are particularly strong. They approach the problem differently: Tradervue emphasises execution analysis, TradeZella and TraderSync combine extensive analytics with replay, while Edgewonk stands out for psychology and rule discipline.

Tick data matters when the sequence of price movement inside a one-minute candle can change the outcome of your test. That is particularly relevant for scalping, very tight stops and strategies where realistic spreads and slippage materially affect results. One-minute data is less precise, but it resolves entries, exits and candle wicks well enough for many session-level and swing strategies. Neither is automatically "proper" or "improper" backtesting. Use the finest resolution your strategy genuinely requires rather than paying for precision that cannot change your decisions.

Do I need tick data to backtest properly?

Not always. Tick data becomes important when price movement inside individual one-minute candles could materially change your result, particularly for scalping, tight stops, spreads and slippage-sensitive strategies. For many session-level and swing strategies, one-minute candles provide enough detail to test entries, exits and wicks sensibly. If your edge depends on tiny intrabar movements, use tick data. If it does not, extra resolution may add cost without adding useful information.

Is a trading journal the same as backtesting software?

No. Backtesting software lets you test trading rules against historical markets before risking money. A trading journal records and analyses trades you have already taken, helping you identify patterns, execution problems and behavioural mistakes.
